Valve adds free-to-play games to Steam

Posted by Lola Lindeman On June - 12 - 2011 NO Comment

Steam just got even better. Rock, Paper, Shotgun tipped us off that Valve has begun offering free-to-play games via its digital distribution service. The current lineup is limited to five titles, and I haven’t heard of any of ‘em. It’s hard to argue with the asking price, though. All you need is a Steam account—no credit card required.

As Penny Arcade so eloquently points out, free-to-play games aren’t always without cost. Players can easily be tempted into shelling out for in-game currency, items, and, of course, hats. I

Lenovo buys German computer seller Medion

TAIPEI/HONG KONG – Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd’s has agreed to buy Germany’s Medion AG in a deal valuing the electronics retailer at up to $900 million, to boost its market share in Europe.

The acquisition, Lenovo’s biggest since its purchase of IBM’s PC business six years ago, comes four months after Lenovo signed a joint venture deal with NEC Corp to sell laptops in Japan.

The deal will double market share to more than 14 percent of the PC market in Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, and give the combined company a share of about 7.5 percent in the western European PC market, Lenovo said on Wednesday.

The news pushed Medion’s shares 17 percent higher in Frankfurt, but Lenovo shares fell more than 3 percent as some investors questioned the rationale of the purchase.

“Lenovo probably wants to add to its presence in mature markets,” said Vincent Chen, an analyst with Yuanta Securities.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs will announce its new anticipated cloud service at its developer conference next Monday, the company said in a release issued on Tuesday.

Apple confirmed that the cloud service will be called “iCloud,” similar to its other product names.

“Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address,” the release said. Of note, Jobs has been on medical leave since early this year and his only recent public appearance thus was when he unveiled the next-generation iPad 2.

At the address, Apple is slated to debut its eighth major Mac OS, Lion, the iOS 5 for the iPad, iPod touch, and the iPhone, as well as the iCloud.
