iPhone Maker Hires Latin America Head

Sony Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC), as it winds up as a troubled joint venture to become fully part of Sony, is spinning out some talent in the process: it’s understood that Anderson Teixeira, formerly an executive that had run different regional operations for the JV, is now Apple’s first head of Latin America—a sign of Apple’s growing interests in the region.

The news, first reported by 9to5Mac, appeared to be confirmed as much by what looks like Teixeira’s own LinkedIn profile. We have contacted Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) to confirm the appointment.

Here’s an exciting update for Android fans. It appears that the rumored Samsung Galaxy S III will enter the market in the next few months.

This exciting rumor comes from Eldar Murtazin, a Russian tech blogger who has leaked his share of handsets in the past. Murtazin hints that he has a Galaxy S III in his possession with this tweet: 

“HD resolution, 12 mpx camera, sw tweaks, android 4 – i like my new phone. Eager to see official announcement in Barcelona,”

He also claims that consumers will be able to purchase the anticipated Android handset in April after it has been unveiled in late February at the MWC in Barcelona.

Televisions getting Siri-style personal assistants

Startup Vlingo on Tuesday said that it is giving televisions the kind of voice-controlled “virtual assistants” that have been a hit with the latest version of Apple’s hot-selling iPhone.

  • “If you are sitting on your couch you can just use your voice to control your TV, set-top box, cable-box or whatever,” Vlingo’s Chris Barnett told AFP as the Consumer Electronics Show got underway in Las Vegas.

    “The TV will talk back to you in Virtual Assistant mode; ask what you want to see and drill down into what you are looking for,” he continued, providing a demonstration.

    The top 10 tech priorities of CIOs

    Analytics and business intelligence will be the top technology priorities for CIOs this year, according to Gartner Inc.’s annual survey of IT executives.

    The second most important technology in the survey is mobile, said Gartner, which asked 2,335 CIOs globally about their business and technology priorities for the year ahead. The CIOs, who were surveyed in the fourth quarter of 2011, control $321 billion worth of IT spending in 45 countries.

    The survey also found that IT budgets globally will be essentially flat, but with much variation regionally.

    In North America, IT budgets will decrease 0.6% compared to 2011, even as they rise by 12.7% in Latin America. The Asia/Pacific region will see a 3.4% increase this year, while Europe is expected to be down by 0.7%.
