Facebook Kills Daily Deal Program: Check-in Deals are Still Up

Facebook proved itself to be one tough cookie and the site is thriving despite all the hype about the competition (read “Google+”). But that does not mean that everything is well with Facebook. The social networking site recently decided to pull a plug on its fledgling ‘Facebook Deals’ program. The venture lasted only 4 months. However, this apparently bad news is certainly a good one for also-struggling crowd-sourcing deal sites like Groupon and other clones.

China yanks video that leaked hacking tool

The state-run China Central Television network has yanked a video that inadvertently included a short clip of a cyber-attack tool targeting Falun Gong websites.

Posted in mid-July, the video was a documentary entitled “The Internet storm is coming!” Eleven minutes into the show, without explanation, it showed b-roll footage of a customized computer tool, apparently choosing from a list of Falun Gong websites to hit with a distributed denial-of-service attack.

It’s unclear where the footage came from, but its appearance in a state-sponsored film appeared to offer an accidental peek into China’s cyber-attack capabilities. Falun Gong computers have been targeted for years by what many consider to be a state-sponsored hacking campaign.

Panasonic will Update LUMIX DMC-LX5 Firmware

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX5 is getting a new firmware updated, dubbed “version 2.0″, on September 13. Updates include:

  • A revised auto focus algorithm for super fast AF speeds. 
  • A new High ISO Reduction Mode for images shot at ISO 1600 or 3200.
  • An upgraded auto white balance for low light settings.
  • Active Mode for POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization).
