Yahoo Engineer Leaves to Build an Open Flickr Alternative

Posted by Jackson Walton On June - 29 - 2011 NO Comment

OpenPhoto is a new “open” alternative to Flickr being built by programmer Jaisen Mathai — an engineer who quit his job at Yahoo (Flickr’s owner) back in May 2011. Instead of storing images using company servers, this new service will allow users to connect their own online storage accounts to store their data within arms reach. This would be like using Flickr to share your images while having the photos themselves be stored in a location that you control (e.g. Amazon S3, Dropbox, etc…).

Mathai is planning to have an open source version of the software that anyone can install on their own servers, and also a hosted version of the software, much like WordPress.org and WordPress.com for blogging. He’s curr

Tips to Shoot Fireworks

With the 4th of July celebration comes to a near, we have gathered some useful tips for any digital photographers out there who want to take some great photos of fireworks:

This is the first important thing to do if you want to get the best spot in the venue. It is even better if you spend some times to scout the location and have a little talk to the event crews to determine where the fireworks will be launched. Once youve got all the information needed, try to position yourself wisely. Find a clear, unbostructed view that meets your compositional requirements based on the terrain. Also try to find a place where people wont be able to wondering around in front of the camera or worse kicking your tripod in the mid-exposure

Report: AMD prepares to phase out Socket AM3 chips

With Llano now out of the gate and Bulldozer due later this summer, the days of Athlon II and Phenom II processors are unsurprisingly numbered. According to DigiTimes, AMD will start phasing out those processors rather quickly—so much so that, by the first quarter of 2012, about 95% of AMD’s desktop processor shipments will be made up of Fusion APUs and Bulldozer chips, the site claims.

The great Socket AM3 exodus will reportedly begin next month, with AMD expected to stop taking orders for chips including the Athlon II X4 610e first. Low-end quad-core Phenom IIs as well as dual-core Phenom IIs and Athlon IIs will be next to go later in the third quarter, while other chips like the Phenom II X6 1100T and 1090T to follow later in the year.

As we saw in our review, even AMD’s flagship Llano desktop offering, the A8-3850, isn’t much of an upgrade over the Phenom II X4 840 provided you don’t care too terribly about integrated graphics performance. T

Going to hospital has its risks. Each year, three million people catch nosocomial or hospital-acquired illnesses and 50,000 people die from them.

Hospitals are testing new ways of combatting this problem, in particular through the use of precious metals such as copper and silver.

n”> – Hitachi Ltd is in talks with Toshiba and Sony about joining the merger of their liquid-crystal display units, a move that would create the world’s largest maker of small panels, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Thursday.

Hitachi has been in separate talks with Hon Hai Precision Industry about a joint venture in LCD panels but those talks have hit difficulties, one of the sources said, making the Japanese conglomerate more likely to join the domestic partnership.

If the three-way alliance goes ahead, the mainly government-funded Innovation Network Corp of Japan will consider investing about 200 billion yen in the merged unit, one source said.

The Nikkei newspaper earlier reported the government fund would likely gain a 70 percent stake for that amount and the three companies would then split the remaining interest.

The Skype app for Android just got a lot more useful with todays update which brings support for free (data charges still apply) two-way video calling. Unfortunately theres a catch as this functionality is available only on four (Android 2.3) handsets.

According to Skype, video calling works on the Google Nexus S, HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo and Xperia pro, with extra support being planned for the near future.

Other goodies included in Skype 2.0 are a tweaked UI (user interface) and SMS support. Skype 2.0 is free and can be downloaded from the Android Market (requires Android 2.1+).
